A long-standing tradition of heart transplant recipients from the University of Minnesota Medical Center are heart pins. Second Chance for Life continues to be honored to offer these mementos to transplant recipients, their caregivers and family members through the years.

What is a heart pin? As you can see in the photo it is a red heart shaped pin with a name, date and heart number affixed on the face. Each is customized for the transplant recipient, their caregivers and family members.

Why the pin? The heart pin is a symbol of the recipient’s triumphant journey through the heart transplantation process which often includes time spent being sick or fearful of the future. The heart pin also represents the personal fulfillment of finding out that you are not alone and that there are family, friends, medical staff and especially fellow transplant recipients to listen to your concerns and share a wealth of experience to help you each step along the way. Because you have had to endure and overcome many obstacles to be successful with your second chance, the pin is a celebration of life.

Tradition. Heart pins have been given to heart transplant recipients for decades and you will see many attendees still wearing these pins at Second Chance events even though their transplant was over ten years ago. For some it is a badge of honor and for others it demonstrates a sense of belonging to a group and a cause larger than themselves.

We are honored to award these pins to you, your caregivers and family members. Please complete the registration form below and we will contact you to arrange delivery.
