Jim Berg joined the SCFLF Board of Directors in 2019. He held the positions of secretary and vice president before becoming president in 2023. He received a heart transplant at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in July 2017 and is a volunteer on UMMC’s Cardiac Unit 6C, assisting the nurses and visiting with patients. “It is important to me to support heart failure patients and to provide hope that their lives will get better.”

Arlene Forrest

Arlene Forrest became active in SCFLF after her husband, Brad, received a heart transplant at UMMC in 2017. She joined the board in 2018 and has been treasurer since 2020. With a background in nursing and in law, she’s served on the boards of several nonprofit organizations and on local government resident commissions. “Second Chance is a flexible organization, allowing us to address the needs of patients, caregivers, and families in a multitude of ways.”

Cheryl Lachelt

Cheryl Lachelt became a board member of SCFLF in 2021. She was first introduced to SCFLF in 2018 when she received an LVAD as a bridge to transplant at UMMC. She received a heart transplant in January 2019. “It has been comforting to know that I was not alone in this ongoing, sometimes bumpy, journey. The Second Chance mission of patients helping patients rings true to me, and I am honored to have the opportunity to give back as a board member.”

After a career in public education, Mark said that his LVAD allows him to continue to do the things that are most important to him, and through Second Chance, provides him an opportunity to help other patients navigate their own unique journeys. "Being part of SCFLF offers me the opportunity to help others in ways I never imagined until I became a part of this wonderful organization."

Jane Johnson

Jane Johnson first became involved with SCFLF in 2018 when her adult son, Matt, spent nine months as an inpatient at UMMC awaiting a new heart. He received his transplant as part of the pediatric transplant program in November 2018. Jane is a registered nurse and licensed family therapist. She became a board member in 2019.

Glen Kelley
Director
Glen Kelley joined SCFLF in 2017 and was president of the organization from 2019 to 2023. He received a heart transplant at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Dallas, Texas in August 2016 at the age of 49, and a kidney transplant at UMMC in 2019. “I am fortunate to have stumbled into my second career. I have become a patient that helps patients. I know I am here for an opportunity: The opportunity to help those that are where I was and to help those who helped me. This second career is simple, it’s all about the gratitude.”

This second career is simple, it’s all about the gratitude.”

Ross Stephenson has been a board member of SCFLF since 2019. He received an LVAD as a bridge to transplant in 2018 and is currently on the transplant waiting list. “I was searching for some volunteer opportunities when I was asked to join the SCFLF board. The fit was perfect for me since I could help others who have LVADs.”

Nancy Senst is a registered nurse who has been involved in organ donation and transplantation for more than 30 years. She is currently a post-heart transplant coordinator at UMMC and coordinates cardiac care with three other nurse coordinators for nearly 400 heart transplant patients. She was first introduced to SCFLF by Cal Stoll, one of the founders of SCFLF, and has been a board member since 2020. “The transplant journey is not one to be taken alone. That is why the support provided by SCFLF is so important and I am honored to be part of it.”
