The
Second Chance for Life Foundation received a donation of almost $1400 in
July 2011 in memory of Jean Loken, who had a heart transplant in 1995. The
money was given by the Home of the Brave Quilt Project (HOTBQP), which makes
quilts to present to the families of fallen soldiers who have served in Iraq
and Afghanistan. Before her death in 2010, Jean had served as the Minnesota
coordinator of this nation-wide project. Don Beld, founder of the HOTBQP, and
Sandi Carstensen, its national coordinator, wanted to honor Jean's memory
with this potholder quilt. Squares for the quilt were received from around
the United States and abroad, and the quilt was assembled by Don. People
donated $5 for a chance to receive the quilt. The quilt made its way to
Minnesota where Kathie Simon Frank coordinated the drawing held in
June 2011. Brad Leathers, who lives in California, received the quilt.
